To kick off this announcement, we have officially launched our new website that explains everything.įor the regular gamer that played our demo or just wants to enjoy Hometopia based on what they’ve already learned about it, there’s only a few subtle changes: By providing players the ability to actually earn money from the games they play, truly own the items they acquire and have a stake in the success of the experience, blockchain technology changes how we think about the games we devote so much of our time playing. While there are many uses for a blockchain, our excitement comes from how it can improve how we experience games. In the past year, you may have also heard about NFTs (non-fungible tokens) as well that rely on the blockchain. The most well known use of blockchain technology is for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. What that means is that no one company or person owns it, nor can they ever manipulate or alter the contents of it. In simplest terms, a blockchain is a digital ledger (or database) that is (usually) entirely decentralized and open. We knew that to really pull off this big vision, we would need better technology and infrastructure to be made available first. Our initial plan was to launch the first phase of Hometopia into Early Access on Steam at the end of January to gather feedback while we worked on this broader ambition. Hometopia is the culmination of that multi-decade mission and we aim to truly be Your Home in the Metaverse. A place to always call home, no matter wherever you really live. From our mobile games like Design This Home and Design This Castle, to our VR titles like Circ and Giant Junior and - ultimately - our upcoming Hometopia, we’ve made it our mission to provide you new ways to create your very own space in virtual worlds. That important theme of home has been a deeply held concept with everything we’ve built. With Circ, you could even move between other VR games and experiences from other developers, while always returning back to your home afterwards. You could build, design and create, in virtual reality with other players online, homes and worlds that focused on social and community interaction - allowing you to really inhabit an alternate life. In 2016, we built what we believe was the first VR metaverse with a project we called Circ. You may have heard this term ‘metaverse’ that’s been all over the news these days, but it is something we have been trying to slowly create for over a decade.
